Daniel Crabtree Throws Gem in Game two
On Sunday February 12, Cleveland State baseball (2-1) played host to Vincennes University under sunny skies and 57 degrees by winning the first game of the doubleheader 7-4 and followed with a 4-1 win in the nightcap to complete the sweep.
Coach Mike Policastro said: "Timely hitting, good pitching and key defensive plays made the difference against a highly competitive Vincennes team."
In game one, down 3-1 going into the 4th inning, Cougar third baseman Jacob Robinson hit a 3-run bomb plating Designated Hitter Yosauny Herrera and Brandon LeJeune who had walked giving the Cougars a 4-3 lead. Vincennes tied the score in the 5th only to see Cleveland State score one in each in the 5th, 6th and 7th for the final 7-4 win.
Cougar starting pitcher Caleb Orr twirled 4.1 innings giving up one earned run, with Brett Varner striking out two in his 1.1 innings of work and taking the win. Bryce Houghton closed out the 7th inning picking up the save.
Cleveland State maximized five hits on the game including Robinson's homerun. Bryce Jenkins, singled and tripled, LeJeune, doubled while catcher Avary Collins rounded the hitting out with a single.
The Cougars ran wild on the bases, stealing six, led by Jenkins and Bryce Burkey with two each and Andre Tarver and LeJeune each with one.
Cougar starter Daniel Crabtree was the winner in game two, throwing 6 innings of 3-hit ball while striking out 10. Back to back homeruns in the 4th inning by Short Stop Colby Taylor and Right Fielder Tate Daniels put Cleveland State on top 2-0 and would be a lead they would never relinquish. The Cougars added single runs in the 5th and 6th that led to the eventual 4-1 win.
Bryson Lofton, Al Swader, Parker Evans and Jenkins each added singles to complete Cleveland States six hit attack. Six walks also added to the offense.
