Cleveland State traveled to Dyersburg State on Friday to open up TCCAA conference play with a three game series against the Eagles.
Dyersburg (16-3, 1-0) used a four run first inning with on pair of two run home runs off Cougars (11-5, 0-1) starting pitcher Daniel Crabtree to put the Eagles in the lead and hold off the Cougars 4-2 in the nine inning game. Crabtree settled in after the first inning, tossing four an one third innings allowing four runs on five hits and striking out five before Javy Favela and Kaleb Orr came out of the Cougars bullpen tossing three ad two thirds inning allowing one hit to keep the Eagles at bay the rest of the game.
The Cougars offense could not get much going off four Eagle pitchers that allowed four hits in the game. Cougar second baseman Jaylen Jones had 2 of the Cougars 4 hits with a single and solo home run in the eighth inning to cut the score to 4-2.
The Cougars rallied in the top of the ninth inning using a walk and hit by pitch to bring the go ahead run to the plate before the Eagles secured the final out of the game.
Both teams return to action Saturday afternoon for a scheduled doubleheader beginning at 12:00.
