Game One Recap
One the final day of the regular season, Friday April 29 Cleveland State won the first game of the doubleheader vs Southwest 4-3 when Andre Tarver scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning breaking a 3-3 tie. Starter Bryce Jenkins tossed 5.2 innings and K'd 9. Brett Varner took the win his fourth on the season while Bryce Houghton pitched the seventh picking up his ninth save.
The Cougars scored a single run in the first inning and two in the fourth taking a 3-0 lead that was short lived as Southwest knotted the game at three with runs in the fifth and sixth. Bryce Burkey led the six-hit attack with two hits while Jacob Robinson, Avery Collins, Jenkins and Nick Iezzi each had one hit. Iezzi's hit plated a run in the fourth while AJ Swader drove in a run in the first.
Game Two Recap
Great pitching by the Cougars was not enough as they lost 1-0 with Robinson picking up their lone hit of the game. Pitchers Ben Smith who struck out five, Tate Daniels, Dayton Wisley, Javier Favela and Jake Smith held Southwest to three hits on the game, which was Cleveland State's final game of the regular season.
What's Next
Cougar baseball with an overall record of 28-22 and a conference mark of 11-15 are the sixth seed in the TCCAA Region VII NJCAA Tournament and are scheduled to play number three seed Dyersburg State. The tournament starts Sunday May 8 with game times set to come out during the week of May 2.
