Game Recap
In the opening game vs Chattanooga State on Friday April 1, Cleveland State lost 6-5 in the nine-inning game in what was a back-and-forth contest with the win being decided in the top of the ninth inning. The Cougars and Tigers answered each other in the second and third innings with one run in each of the innings with Jacob Robinson hitting a solo homerun in the second.
Chattanooga scored two in the fifth inning only to have Cleveland State come roaring back in the seventh when Jaylen Jones doubled home three runs giving the Cougars a 5-4 lead. Cleveland lost the lead in the eighth and ninth as the Tigers scored one in each inning for the win.
Adding to the homerun and double by Robinson and Jones the Cougars slashed out five more hits, two by Bryce Jenkins and one each by Colby Taylor, Ryan Stephens and Bryce Burkey. Burkey also walked twice in the game and Jones stole a base.
The Cougars used three pitchers, starter Owen Clark who tossed six innings and struck out six, followed by Scott Varner and Bryce Houghton.
What's Next
Cleveland State has an overall record and conference mark of 21-12 and 6-6 as they go in to the final day of conference competition vs Chattanooga State on Saturday April 2. The scheduled doubleheader is set for 12 and 2 p.m. at Cougar Baseball field on the campus of Cleveland State. Admission is $8 per person.
