Cleveland State baseball hosted Maryville College (Tenn.) on March 2 and won both ends of a doubleheader 14-4 and 17-7 completing a four-game sweep in the 2021-2022 season.  The Cougars used 16 combined hits in both games for the two five-inning wins.

 

Two-run homers by Brandon LeJeune and Avery Collins in inning two in the first game put the Cougars ahead 4-0.  Later in the inning Jaylen Jones doubled in another run and a double steal by Andre Tarver and Jones led to an unearned run ending the second inning with a 6-0 lead.

 

The Cougars would finish off their scoring in the third inning plating eight more runs for the eventual 14-4 score.  Cleveland State used the pitching of starter Jake Smith, Zane Guess and Tate Daniels to hold Maryville to three hits.  Zane Guess would take the win for his first win of the season.

 

With a nine-hit attack in game one, Jacob Robinson had two, along with LeJeune and Collins.  Bryce Burkey would join Jones and Swader each with one hit.  Collins also led the way with four RBI's.

 

In game two Cleveland State used seven hits and seven walks, while scoring 13 runs in the fourth inning leading to the 17-7 win.  Colby Taylor blasted a three-run homer while AJ Swader hit a solo homerun both in the explosive fourth inning.  Joining the hit parade included Matt Schultz with two hits including a double, Bryson Lofton with a triple and Hunter Gray and Cameron Campbell each with one hit.

 

The Cougars would run four pitchers out to the mound, giving up only five hits with Dayton Wisley pitching a scoreless inning in winning his first of the season.  Starter Drake Holland struck out three, Trey Scott followed giving up no hits and Ben Smith finished the game striking out three.

 

On Friday Cougar baseball heads to Dyersburg State to open conference play with a three-game series set for a single nine-inning game on March 4 and doubleheader on March 5. Essentially with an 11-4 overall season record, Cleveland State matches Dyersburg who stands at 13-3.
